Gorge Walk

Straddie’s Famous North Gorge Walk

Using the map of Point Lookout you can download below , you can easily walk to the series of whale watching platforms situated high above the surf on Whale Rock, Frenchmans, Deadmans and Cylinder headlands. The walks are achievable for most fitness levels and are an ideal way to follow the whales as they pass by Australia’s second most easterly point, the aptly named Whale Rock!

The Gorge walk is 1.2 k in length, on a purpose built boardwalk and contour trail winding its way through she-oaks and pandanus palms. The views out to sea and into the North Gorge itself are mesmerising to say the least. See our Video of the Gorge Walk Here.

Only 2m inside Australia’s most easterly point, Cape Byron, Point Lookout is close to the continental shelf and the whales often become clearly visible as they veer left around the Point.

Sea turtle and the largest pod of bottle nose dolphins in the world call Point Lookout home and are seen almost every day. You will also see Sea Eagles, Gulls, and a variety of other sea birds.

Surfing on Straddie

When the swell is up, however, North Stradbroke’s waves are best left to the experienced surfers who cross like migrating birds from the mainland, having watched weather maps for weeks waiting for Natures forces to align an assault on Queensland’s most easterly outpost

Position yourself on the headlands around North Gorge for a spectacular show of wave riding at its best. These same breaks are where Gary Elkerton, one of Australia’s most successful professional surfers, honed his skills, and where current world number 2, Bede Durbidge, escapes the helter skelter of the pro circuit.
